I'm using sys-apps/portage-2.0.49_pre18 and have created a directory called /etc/portage where I have put a file called package.unmask. This file contains two entries, namely app-office/openoffice and net-fs/samba. When I try to merge samba, I can see that net-fs/samba-3.0.0_beta3-r1 would get installed. This is what I expected it to do. But it is different with openoffice. emerge says that app-office/openoffice-1.0.3-r1 would get installed and not openoffice-1.1_rc3 as expected by me. (I have deleted sys-apps/star, so this should't cause a problem any more.)

Does anybody know the reason for this behavior?

Openoffice is also masked with KEYWORDS="-x86 -ppc" (not ~x86), so you need ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="-x86" emerge openoffice.
