They are both very nice.
In my experience Mplayer seems to handle almost everything.
For everything that Mplayer cannot do, I use Xine.
Your Mileage May Vary....
If you are on a Gentoo system, emerge both of them.
It never hurts to have an alternative. |

i was (and probably still am) a die-hard xine user ...but at times when xine fails (seldom, but still), having mplayer at your hand is really usefull _________________ tea+free software+law=hook

I prefer mplayer, but both do a great job. I cant even think of anything the devs could improve. _________________ I'm really wondering what Lovechild is doing nowadays... |

mplayer seems to be more efficient and compatible, but xine seems to have better output video quality |

I use mplayer most of the time. Xine's default interface (the attempt at imitating a VCR) is really ugly, whereas mplayer is just a window. But as far as I can tell, mplayer can only fast-forward or rewind by 10 seconds at a time, which is really annoying.
Improved graphical front-ends exist for both. I've been using Kaffeine for a while, but I'm trying to find a gtk/gnome replacement.
The video quality and supported file formats seem to be pretty similar. mpeg, avi, and wmv make up the vast majority of internet video anyway. _________________ Auridel |

I tried gxine. The gtk interface is pretty nice, but dragging the slider bar around causes it to jerk a bit and then stop playing. Mplayer may only support 10-second increments, but it's a lot more stable than that. _________________ Auridel |

There are 3 scales of movement commands - left/right, up/down and pageup/pagedown, pageup/pagedown moving much further than just 10s. |
