What exactly is the danger in having port 6000 (or whichever port your X server is listening on) open to the world (including the german t-dialin's)?

Can it be used to get root access to my machine? Any filesystem access?

It is never good to have processes that are running has root listening to the outside world.
Either configure iptables or deactivate the listening.
