im new to gentoo, and have only been using linux for about a year, previously my linux use was on and off. I have found that Mandrake and RedHat are getting too microsofty, and Debian is too out of date, even their unstable releases. Anyways, thats why i chose Gentoo.

i have been trying to install gentoo for about 2 days, using stage3 tarball for pentium 4 (i have a 3.06ghz with hyperthreading processor), on the 2 cd set. I have followed the gentoo install guide to the T... and now... i have seemed to have doen something wrong. When i get to step 16 (instaling the kernel) and type emerge -k sys-kernel/gentoo-sources, i get an error, bash telling me that the emerge command cannot be found.

You need to chroot into your Gentoo installation before emerge will work (no matter what stage you started from).

It doesn't really matter. Boot with whatever kernel works on your hardware. The kernel you choose when the CD boots will not have any effect on which kernel ends up in your finished system.
