What to buy for a protable DVD (+/-) RW burner?
Would someone explain or point me to what the difference between the two format, what should I got for backup and movie burning?
What software in Gentoo can be use ? Are there any howtos?

The best drive (IMHO) is the Sonu DRU-500 (or something like that). There is an external version that is both firewire and USB2.
As for the difference, it's basically that one group made a standard, some other people didn't like it/didn't want to pay the licenseing fees, and so they made their own standard. But the Sony drive can write BOTH standards, so you don't have to worry 'about it.
As for software, I have no idea.
