I'm not a sparc-gentoo user yet, but I'd like to start it soon. I have some sparc boxes sitting around (SS5, SS10). Any suggestions on which hardware is supported best? Is it at all possible to install gentoo on these *without* a sparc cdrom? |

The current technique I'm going with is (on a Sparc Station 10 with no CDROM)
FTP install of redhat 6.2 (takes about an hour)
download the stage 1 tarball (tgz I believe, not the other one)
Delete as much of the redhat install as I can get away with (rm -rf * is your friend, but don't get rid of all of the tools you need)
untar the tarball into the root directory (/)
Follow the instructions as given (takes about 3 days)
I don't know offhand what the arch and compile flags are, but if you grab a stage 3 tarball and look in it, it will tell you (or someone will post here)
Grab the vanilla source code and it should install no problem, of course I couldn't get it to boot when i tried, but i may of missed a step when updating silo
That of any help? |
