|
|
hello all,
I have been working with gentoo for 3 years, from 2005 till 2007, and when I said working ... I used it while maintaining systems at Cisco, and Netapp...
but for the last year, I have been traveling, and left all my PC's behind. now I am in Brazil and just got myself a new laptop, I am trying to download the last gentoo so that I can install a fresh version....
this is what I found on the download page :

Warning: The 2008.0 releases are deprecated, and their links will be removed soon.
|
but nowhere can I find another more recent version of the cd's
torrent only shows 2008, download links as well
help ? _________________ reup

There are weekly Minimal CDs and stages now.
http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/where.xml
You can use the Gentoo-based sysresccd if you prefer to install using a graphical environment (in this case, jwm ).
Edit: Corrected spelling and added a comment about the graphical environment. |

thanks a lot,
I saw that but did not believe it was the actual version, more like a nightly build
I probably have to learn to reorient myself on the gentoo website.
again, thanks _________________ reup

No problem.
By the way, the Gentoo Handbook hasn't been updated yet, so it still talks about obtaining a 2008.0 stage3. You will want to ignore that part. Get your stage3 from the current/ directory on the mirrors. |

There's a bug for it. It's my understanding that the docs team is understaffed at the moment, so that may be the reason the Handbook hasn't been updated yet. |

I use the SystemRescueCD myself, simply because of it's multiple applicability, it satisfies x86 and amd64 installs, and it has multiple useful commandline tools for fixing broken systems. _________________

SystemRescueCD is based on gentoo right ?
if I understand well, I could boot from any livecd (knoppix, ubuntu...) prepare my disk and download the stage3.
I prefer to use systemRescueCD if it is gentoo, but from Brazil, my connection is very poor (10k/s) and I would like to go with the smallest bootable CD
ubuntu type of cd are 600mb so out of the picture, but other livecd are very small

Yes.

Yes, just about any LiveCD will do.
(The Gentoo Minimal CD is about 80 MB for x86 and 90 MB for amd64.) |

It's unlikely that there will be another live cd release in the foreseable future (or ever). |

How can you move to this format, without updating the install CD's, this is really confusing for new and old users. Gentoo used to have some of the best documentation but now it seems it hasn't been updated in almost 2 years. |

Hi,
The weekly build LiveCD allows, obviously, frequent update. That's why Gentoo is using it a the moment.
Besides some little differences (usually fixed a little later), the same "old" documentation may be used with the today material. So it's good enough.
The only remark I could mention is the lack of a gathered documention for ~arch users. Since some stuff changes from the mainstream (like OpenRC) and are a bit different from the stable documentation.
But hey, this is the unstable branch, and therefore it's my responsibility to deal with it. Moreover, the documentation is available here and there even for the ~arch branch.
By the way, if someone feels like helping me, I'm quite interested into compiling the different pieces of documentation into a one handy document/place for the ~arch branch. Somewhat offering my experience with Gentoo to the community
Thanks && Regards,

LiveCD refers to the broken graphical install disk witch gentoo offered years back. The only supported install medium is the minimal install disk. About ~80MB in size and no X obviously. Annual builds are a problem if you happen to need a newer kernel for your shiny new computer than the 9 month old provides. Wifi is such a problem field. Therefore gentoo went over to weekly builds.
You do not need a minimal install cd. You can install gentoo in a hundred different ways. Once the system is installed and running there are only updates to the packages via portage or another package manager. Gentoo is versionless. |
