Hi,

I've just upgrade KDE 3.5.9 > 3.5.10 and can not log in.

My user-name comes up OK, but after I enter my password i am returned to the log-in screen.
I can log-in to a terminal as a normal user/root OK.

Any help is much appreciated
CM

I did as suggested in the post, but no change.

To clarify, when i log-in, the screen goes black for a second or two then returns with the blue background and log-in box.

There are no messages in any logs that i can find.

I remerged xorg-server just to see, but no change.

I've looked and searched all over but to no avail.

sounds like the problem i'm having, though logs tell me pam is the problem really. seems xdm/kdm can't work with pam, so (in my case) kdm just restarts after login-info is entered.
could you check, or have you checkd /var/log/messages when you try to log in via kdm/xdm and see if you get any pam-errors there?

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I can't access /var at the moment - am on windaz and /var is ext4, but I can't recall any pam errors (probably would have reinstalled/uninstalled if so).
I have just reinstalled pam after reading a thread on the KDE forum - no change. I can log into xdm OK.
I am wondering if an unmerge - remerge of KDE may fix it, or maybe complete Xorg/X11?

I had the same problem, solved it by explicitly emerging kdebase-meta.

There were some packages which were not updated (with emerge -DavuNt world) and also one missing package:
kdebase-startkde
...

Well I'll try that then. I did emerge kdebase-startkde after the upgrade.
Thanks

Well, I emerged kdebase-meta with the same result. I've been over to the KDE forums, but there was nothing substantial. I registered for the forums, but it has not been activated (2 days), and sending an email to them had the same result. <sigh> I think I'll look at gnome.

Well, I was using gnome for a while (sigh), and found that I could access kde from GDM. After a few system updates I can now use kdm :D
