I have the 2 drive version of the western digital my book http://martin.hinner.info/mybook/internals.php. I want to turn this into a remote backup server. For security reasons and because the hardware is pretty anemic I want to keep everything as lean as possible. I was thinking rather than start with an embedded distro and removing the things I don't need I would us crossdev to compile everything I need from source. My question is are their any Gentoo specific guides for what I am trying or should I look at something like Linux from scratch and try and figure out how to make that work with crossdev? I have searched the forms and Google but either their isn't much info out their or I don't know the right key words to use. Any help in this matter would be appreciated. I am also interested in documenting this project in hopes it might be useful to others so any ideas on how to do that (maby create a wiki page?) would be helpfull as well. Thanks |

Computer users fall into two groups:-
those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail. |

well if you go the linux from scratch route you will still need to get your self a toolchain... so you may as well just start with a stage2 and build there _________________ Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger. |

As long as there is a easy way to "flash" this device, you can do whatever you want with it. Crossdev is a good starting point. Since it's armv4 device, you might want to take a look on our overlay (embedded overlay). It was created in openmoko phone in mind (armv4tl) but includes many patches for cross compilation. Some people are using it for different devices (personally I'm using it for freerunner and beagleboard).
You might want to have a look on http://gentoo.mindzoo.de/index.cgi as well - that's some basic docs.
Some useful irc channels:
#gentoo-embedded
#gentoo-openmoko
#gentoo-pandora
If you need some recent arm stages, check out /releases/arm/autobuids on your favorite mirror (like http://mirror.bytemark.co.uk/gentoo/releases/arm/autobuilds/). You will find basic working system there.
I hope that helps _________________ 95% of all computer errors occur between chair and keyboard (TM)
