I unmasked 185.18.14 and my troubles have gone away. Anybody have trouble with 180.29? I haven't had problems with this mobo and gentoo before.

Thanks for any input.

Can you give us a little info about your system?

Here is some more info. The box was quite stable when not running X. I could emerge world and otherwise put a heavy load on the CPU without the box freezing up. When I started X it would eventually freeze up and the only way to recover was the reset button.

Hi,

nvidia-drivers 180.29 are broken, do not use them.

Hi, version 190.18 is out and works fine for me.

Best Regards,
Maxime

In addition to other threads here, this has been reported on the nVidia forums, and in a Gentoo bug report, (see below). After updating the nvidia driver, you reboot your system and the X server hangs, (apparently), at the point where the nvidia driver is setting the screen resolution, (see the Gentoo bug report below). In order to downgrade the driver you need to reboot without loading the X server, and get to the console, to reemerge the 185.18.14 driver. That's the latest version of the nVidia driver that works on my system, (and others posting on this problem elsewhere). If you are masking packages to avoid this problem you will currently either need to mask anything above 185.18.14, or explicitly mask 185.18.29 and 185.18.31.

nVidia Forums Post on this bug with the 185.18.29 driver
nVidia Forums Post on this bug with the 185.18.31 driver

Edit: I also confirm what MaximeG and keenblade have posted. Unmasking the latest nvidia drivers in portage, 190.18, work in my setup too.

I did not try the 190.18. I am sticking with 185.18.14 for a while.

Edit : I tried the 190.18 as MaximeG pointed, and it works fine for me, too.
