kernel /boot/bzImage root=/dev/md2
title= wxp
root (hd0,0)

It sounds like you might have your kernel compiled for the wrong CPU family. Double-check that setting; it's under "Processor type and features" in menuconfig.
You can get back into your computer by using the steps outlined here. _________________ I don't believe in witty sigs. |

i have an athlon xp 1800
and selected athlon cpu in cpu tab!
i think the pc doesnt extract the kernel image!
how can i access the raid devices from boot cd??
do i have to create a new raidtab to get the existing raid
or can i use some kind of a kernel parameter to autodetect my raids?
dont wanna do another install again! |

Hmm... try using i686 (PPro/Pentium II or above), just to get it working.

If Grub couldn't find the kernel, it would display an error message instead of rebooting.

no chance to boot that damn system!!
i tried now nearly every prozessor type!!
athlon
x86-686
pII/p pro
even 386
nothing works
when i press gentoo in grub
the next screen i see is:
Booting 'gentoo linux'
root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /boot/bzImage root=/dev/md1
[Linux-bzImage, setup=0x1400, size=0x19686f]
next messages:
uncompressing kernel.. ok
then some numbers and chars
and the reboot
(no kernel panic)
what is that?? |

you know im having the same problem, non raid board though, tried various processor types no can do but ive also done reinstalls still with no luck. Ive installed gentoo on other athlon systems with absolutely no problems what so ever ive already posted this problem for help after i spent hours reading posts, changing settings, and doing as replies have suggested blah blah blah not to mention all the downloading. Stll no luck..............hey guess what install #6 no good either......................lol Thank goodness boss out of town. I finally gave up went back to RH71...........yeah it works, it may be "bloated" and not fully "optimized" but it works. If you find a solution let me know puleeeze this is driving me nuts......thanks |

lots of chars and numbers!
but the reboot!!
no kernelpanic or system halt! only a reboot!!
i go crazy!
is there a problem with the gentoo-sources and athlon xp prozessor or what??

If you say you've used the same kernel config on another distro, perhaps you might want to try using vanilla-sources instead of gentoo-sources. Maybe one of the gentoo kernel patches is hurting you. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

I have similar problems on a pentium I. I also tried to boot the image with lilo - smae result: kernel decompression starts and then the system reboots. I´am now compiling with the zlib option. dunno if that helps.

if some had that problem too please post your try's to solve the problem!

There is also a redhat-sources package in case your system is dependent on redhat patches, and if you have a bootable RH system somewhere you could always copy the kernel binary and modules tree from your working RH system if you are really desperate. You may run into some annoyances if devfs is not enabled, but it would be better than spontaneous rebooting, at least. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

The first time I compiled the kernel, I forgot to change the cpu type and had the same problem. Tried changing the type with no success. Finaly, I deleted the old source tree, downloaded a new gentoo-source tree, and everything worked.
I did find an other workaround by searching google. I haven't tried it myself but appearntly you may be able to install lilo into /boot and then have grub load lilo instead of the kernel directly using grub's chainloader option. |

make sure you are cleaning out your linux src directory properly - it sounds like zummy hadn't done this:
once you are booted from cd and have chrooted do:
Code: |
cd /usr/src/linux
cp .config /tmp/.config
make mrproper
cp /tmp/.config .config
make menuconfig #exit and save
make dep && make clean bzImage modules modules_install
|
then follow the rest from the regular install
the make mrproper should return the src tree to its original state. the copying of the .config is just so you don't have to go back and redo all the settings. you might have had stale .o files or old dependencies.
anyway, just a guess...

oh yea, having exclamation points at the end of all your sentences gets annoying. I hear yelling in my head |
