I have a promised onboard raid controller, i think it's PDC20265. After downloading latest gentoo installer cd, i started to install it. The kernel of installer started nicely, found promise raid, and other hardware. I completed every step written in the installation guide, in addition to see how it goes i compiled a kernel without changing the original settings. The resulted bzImage was exactly the same as the kernel placed on the CD, which is very good, because it should be the same. Being careful, i added both to the lilo, so i can boot which i want.
The problem is the following. Both kernel (the precompiled one, and what i compiled), freezes when it finds the raid controller. However the kernel of installer doesn't, but only if i tell it the "doataraid" parameter! It writes out that promise ... found, but can't reach the point where it should write out the existing hde and hdg harddrives. I think it's worth mentioning that i had the same problem with debian, and that's why i tried gentoo, thought it was debian's fault. Now i see it's common problem on my computer, and i believe it's some kind of kernel configuration. Since i didn't touch the original gentoo kernel configuration, i have no idea what should i change to avoid the freezing of kernel.
Can anyone suggest me what should i set and what i shouldn't? Should something be module or kernel level? I am a bit pissed off anyway, since the original setting should work fine. |
