Let's have a topic for all those ideas that seem really clever, until you actually try them. I'll start the ball rolling with something that happened to me the other day.
I noticed that some services on my computer hadn't been started automatically so I wanted a list of them and their status. I did this at the root prompt: "for i in /etc/init.d/*; do echo -n $i; $i status; done". All was well until...
/etc/init.d/halt.sh Halting system...
Instant poweroff!
