Hi, well I know some guys will love this and some guys will hate this. Personally though I'm all for choice. But is it possible that someone might come up with a graphical front end for portage? (Maybe someone will tell me that this already exists....) In Red Hat and Madrake update I can see at a glance what's available and select individual files to download and exclude others I dont. Couldn't you just have a script/front end that when you ran it would automatically invoke emerge sync and any other necessay commands and when you select a specific file for download, this could do the same as "emerge package name" or "emerge unmerge package name" without any need to do the typing? This isn't really just about saving time and making things easier (although that always helps) mostly its about beeing able to see what's on portage and utilise the resources it provides efficiently. I wouldn't mind file descriptions for the files on portage either, but I guess that possibly another issue...) The guys who would hate this simply wouldn't have to use it. Like I said, it should be about choice.

Hello Gents,

Yes, I've heard kportage does some of the functions you mentioned. But I can see you loathe the command line because CLI portage does everything you mentioned. Just wanted to make sure you know CLI portage could do everything you mentioned. That's it. Yes, I recommend Kportage, even though I've never used it, although I use KDE.

i wouldnt necessarily say that using a GUI interface means he loathes the CLI. i use the CL mainly, but i find kportage to be much better in terms of system package management, because it allows you to see in one list all of the different packages and their descriptions that are installed on your system, and quickly and easily keep tabs on whats need and what is unnnecessary.

Hmm well I don't mind the CL, but just for speed.... Anyway, I just got round to installing Gentoo on my new system and this time when I tried to install kportage this time I got an error saying:

For more details about this problem, look at the end of config.log.
Make sure that you have compiled Qt with thread support!

!!! ERROR: app-portage/kportage-0.6.1 failed.

!!! died running ./configure, kde_src_compile:configure

Does anyone know what's going on or how to fix it? Can I emerge something that will put this right?
