more of a question in regards to using a MTA for a desktop environment...most AV stuff is designed for MTA's as well as most spam software I see is designed for MTA's also. So my question is this...how do I set it up?

I've never setup a working mail server (on linux that is...had enough nightmares working with Exchange when they came out with AD but that's beside the point)...so I'm starting from scratch.

I've emerged Postfix...now what? what do I need to do to set it up to pick up mail from my isp's mail server and to flag spam, remove viri etc.

Thanks in advance to anyone's help!

hmm, with the risk of sounding.. er like a one-upmanship idiot, I'll ask you "Do you know what an MTA is?".

an MTA doesn't fetch email from a mail server. MTA stands for Mail Transfer Agent, i.e. it is a mail server.

try fetchmail- it gets mail from otherwhere, and delivers it to your MTA.

Yes i do know what an mta is, I try to avoid using terms that I do not fully know the meaning of. The servers that relay messages to each other until is reaches it's destination are MTA's.

I do know about such programs as fetchmail but the reason i asked for help is mainly because i've never set one up before and thought a community of people who use these types of programs could help me start on the right foot.

Perhaps I wasn't totally clear in my intentions (it happens when you type this thing after long days).

task: that guide helped a lot...not sure why i didn't find it in my earlier search. Thanks!

Last question...recommended AV, why you recommend it and how to set it up? (Main reason for AV: just to have one...call me paranoid but I'm also sitting behind three separate firewalls so it's understandable.)

Sorry, but I must have misunderstood what you said:

All I meant to say was that postfix doesnt "pick up" mail from anywhere... It doesnt initiate connections to receive mail, something which fetchmail does.

Just wanted to help :)

Oh and btw, that link was supplied by Taskara, not by me

@christsong84
just out of my couriosity...
can you give me a network plan? Three seperate firewalls is incredible :-)
Are they managed by seperate people (would make sense)? Which OS(es) is/are used?
Sounds like military business *g*

TIA

lol...no...I just like playing around...It's a home business...nothing ultra private really.

Network plan:
- One server (genesis) does file/print, web, DB services mostly for testing before publishing to our web-hosting company (runs gentoo...has it's own firewall built into the box...love that iptables)
- two desktops running win2k (they are too old to run XP and users aren't quite ready for linux though they are playing around with it a bit)
- my laptop which runs Gentoo of course as it's dedicated OS
- on dedicated firewall computer (I've tried smoothwall and it works well...I swap between smoothwall and a cutom gentoo build in the making...it's a really slow computer)

layout:
On entrance, you first encounter the dedicated firewall box....next you hit the router's firewall (yeah...the firewall box is plugged into the WAN port)...then on my personal laptop I have a personal firewall setup using iptables and shorewall. Thus you hit three before getting into my computer...it's setup so it's not that hard to host the occasional nwn game or anything like that :D
