Yesterday I did world update and my nvidia-drivers were downgraded from 177.82 to 173.14.15. After that all games started to crash suddenly, so I tried to emerge some newer drivers, but so far no luck. I tried with 180.29, 180.60, even 185.13 from zugaina overlay, but it's all the same. Every game suddenly crashes, living me at the gnome desktop with no control over mouse so I have to restart xorg. Nothing seems wrong at system log. And how's that happened that now portage is always trying to install 173.14.15 again? :

| At least I found out why my portage went crazy. My layman configuration was at the bad location (guess because of some update I missed) and my zugaina overlay wasn't synced for a long time, so nvidia-kernel-180.29 from zugaina conflicted with the ebuild from the main tree. Ok that's fixed now, I'm at the current stable driver but my games are still crashing. They work only for a minute or so. I'm really confused about what to do next, or where to look. Is there some nvidia configuration file? Maybe some configuration incompatibility between old drivers I've been forced to install and current ones? |

| The last time I had games/3d apps lock up X randomly, it turned out to be that my video card fan had died & it was overheating. |

I solved this, the nvidia driver problem was so misleading.
After I checked all nvidia configuration files archive I had to conclude that it looks like the nvidia driver is not the source of my problem so I moved further and checked all other packages that were installed during yesterday's update.
Hal looked suspicious so I re-emerged it with +debug use flag just to see what's the output, and guess what?
I didn't need the output since everything is working now!
