PostPosted: Sat Aug 23, 2003 7:04 am    Post subject: apache 1.3 or apache 2 ? Reply with quote

hey, I have a gentoo server I'm about to re-install.

and I'm wondering whether I should stick with apache 1.3, or go apache 2?

I will use it to serve my webpage (which MAY need front page extensions - so family an easily upload info)

and also run squirrelmail for external courirer-imap access..

I will need ssl and mod_php, but won't need mod_perl.

and if I DO go with apache 2, should I add "apache2" in my USE flags?

mos_ssl wants to install apache 1.3 - will I need BOTH apache 1.3 AND 2 installed then ? will this cause problems?

Is it easier to just stick with apache 1.3 for now?

any thoughts ?

cheers,

Chris

I'd go with apache-2, no need to mask apache versions

no idea about that

I will need ssl and mod_php, but won't need mod_perl.

squirrelmail and mod_php work fine with apache-2, ssl is integrated in apache-2 (no need for mod_ssl).

yes, that will make sure that if a module supports BOTH apache-1 and apache-2 it will compiled for the second.

As I said, no need for mod_ssl with apache-2.

Maybe, but at some point apache-1 will be deprecated, so why not doing it now ?

OK cool..

I'll go apache2 then :D

my system will still prob have both versions installed tho won't it ?

cause come things still need apache 1.3?

if I have apache2 installed, will portage still want to downgrade it to 1.3 ?

or will that only happen if there is an app that has apache1 as a depencency?

I just don't want it to get messy having both versions installed.. u know ?

you mentioned that I don't need mod_ssl etc with apache2 - how does this work?

what other "plugins" will I not need ?

thanks heaps :D if all seems well I'll make the move to apache2! woah... need to sit down..

well, you don't need to emerge mod_ssl because it is distributed with apache-2, so if you emerge apache-2 you automatically have mod_ssl. portage will only install apache-1 if there is a package that has apache-1 as a dependency (like mod_ssl). There are several modules in apache-2 that have their own package (mod_dav, mod_auth_ldap and some others, I don't know the complete list). In many cases when a module has apache-1 as a dependency there is a version integrated in apache-2, just check your modules directory for apache-2.
