Why isn't the nedit package being updated anymore? Version 5.4RC1 is already out but the last version in portage is 5.4_pre20030213 which is very old... What happend to the maintainer?

Not sure what happened to the maintainer, but you could always file a bug on bugzilla with an updated ebuild.
