The only way I can burn DVD+R media with my SATA DVD on amd64
box is to do the following:
Connect SATA DVD to a IDE slot via a SATA to IDE converter
Disable all PATA libata options
Enable ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL
My SATA HD still works ok using the libata VIA SATA stuff, my DVD
is connected as an old hda IDE drive. It at least now no longer turns the media
into coasters, multi session works.
Although k3b burns the data, it is still unable to verify the data, even if it is ok, it
crashes and freezes if you try. It also sometimes freezes after burn completion,
thats even with eject try turned off, if on it completely hangs.
So I cant really say we have solved this as there are without a doubt either,
problems with the libata stuff and or my kernel config.
Thanks you to all who offered help and advice, but without someone with major
experience and knowledge of the issues I have to wait and hope that the developers
will solve it in future versions.

From your lspci, your via chipset is not AHCI, so you need the SFF support.
I've seen some via+sata issues while searching the internet.
Do you have pata (ide) slots on your mb? You can use a sata to pata/ide adapter for your sata dvd drive.
Or a sata pci adapter with a promise or other than via chipset. |
I'm having pretty much the same problem burning a dual-layer DVD-R.
Gets to 100% then gives the "can't flush buffers" error and dies.

I write audio and data cd's without problems. Don't use DVD disks, especially dual-layer, much. Disk is Verbatim, write speed was 2x.
Think the writer is an LG dual-layer Lightscribe.
Perhaps this is an AMD64 problem?

Hi Ian
Thanks for the reply, I see you are just down the road from me
To be honest I had forgotten about this post as I posted it in July with little or no response.
I have never solved the problem, it works ok with the sata/ide converter card, so let sleeping
dogs lie.
I have just upgraded to KDE4.3 form 3.5 so it probably time to give it a bash again, not that it will
make any difference, but its worth a try.
Still trying to recover from the financial meltdown of going through a couple of cakes of dvd's
trying to solve it last time. _________________ No great thing is created suddenly. - Epictetus (A.D.200) |

I'm starting to wonder if LG shipped a batch of dicey drives to South Africa.

Dont think so, bought two at the time, suspecting the same thing, a
LG & Samsung Multi DVD writers, and if I remember correctly, they
both did the same thing. _________________ No great thing is created suddenly. - Epictetus (A.D.200) |

I gave up burning DVD's with K3B some time ago due to various problems.
(oringinally that k3b appeared to "crash my dvd driver while checking burn correctness. I had to reboot to get the dvd drive working again)
I tried again the other day with the ~amd64 k3b on 2 DVD+rw's.
It rendered both unusable with any software.
I write my DVD's from the command line. see man growisofs. It is fairly straightforward and has never caused any trouble. |
