|
|
Hi
Up until a few days ago I could burn data dvd+r media no problem.
However I no longer can, k3b loads the blank dvd+r media, starts a
session, writes the data, closes. When you try mount it again in either
k3b or from command line, it fails to mount.
mount -t iso9660 /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom
Code: |
mount: block device /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr0,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
|
mesg | tail
Code: |
ata5.00: cmd a0/00:00:00:00:08/00:00:00:00:00/a0 tag 0 pio 2048 in
cdb 28 00 00 06 26 a0 00 00 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
res 40/00:02:00:00:08/00:00:00:00:00/a0 Emask 0x4 (timeout)

I assume my kernel etc is setup ok as it mounts factory cd & dvd media or
data dvd media I burned a while ago without a problem, only stuff I burn now
is turned into a coaster.
I have read a few sort of related posts and checked on the kernel config
that has been mentioned.
portion of my .config
Code: |
# SCSI device support

# CONFIG_RAID_ATTRS is not set
CONFIG_SCSI=y
CONFIG_SCSI_DMA=y
# CONFIG_SCSI_TGT is not set
CONFIG_SCSI_NETLINK=y
CONFIG_SCSI_PROC_FS=y
#
# SCSI support type (disk, tape, CD-ROM)
#
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SD=y
# CONFIG_CHR_DEV_ST is not set
# CONFIG_CHR_DEV_OSST is not set
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SR=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SR_VENDOR=y
CONFIG_CHR_DEV_SG=y

I dont know what else you need to help so please tell me what you need ,
as I am new to this and not very linux efficient.

SATA DVD WRITER
Any help to find out what is going on would be appreciated _________________ No great thing is created suddenly. - Epictetus (A.D.200)

|

Hi thanks for that, does not tell me much though, maybe someone who knows what to look for,
see code block below below:
I am beginning to think that it has something to do with the new libata stuff, I say
this because, I have two box's, both identical except for the dvd writers, one is ide
(works fine) and one which is sata (trashes dvd media) Both are amd64, same kernel,
same config etc. (as far as I can tell)
The Samsung sata drive was 3 months old, but just to be sure I went and bought a new LG sata
dvd writer, guess what? it does the same thing, so the drive was fine.
Please can someone tell me where to start solving this problem, as I am really pulling my hair out.

Pleasesssssssssss someone
What I find strange is, if I mount any data dvd+r media that has been burned on
my ide dvd writer, this sata dvd writer sees it fine, same applies to any commercial cd or dvd.
Why can I no longer burn data on this drive without the session becoming unreadable?
How do I go about working out why it does this? _________________ No great thing is created suddenly. - Epictetus (A.D.200) |

Are you in the cdrw group?
To check it type
Code: | cat /etc/group | grep cdrw |
If your user is not in it, try
Code: | gpasswd -a <your-username-without-the-pointed-brackets> cdrw |

Hi, thanks for response.
cat /etc/group | grep cdrw
cdrw::80:haldaemon,jeff
Yes my user is, I also have tried everything as root, same thing
I also installed brasero to make sure it was not k3b, same thing.
It would appear, however you burn data to a dvd, it is not recognized by
the system thereafter. _________________ No great thing is created suddenly. - Epictetus (A.D.200) |

You said you could burn dvds a few days ago, what did you do since then?
Maybe kernel upgrade? Do you still have the 28th? Does this work? |

I have done at least one world update along with kernel upgrade to
2.6.29-r5, I have tried my last 2 kernel versions, both do same.
I think in all the confusion of changing writers, from IDE to SATA I think
I only read from the new SATA, writing was done only on IDE
This SATA burner will read any commercial CD DVD or DVD+R as long as it was burned on
my IDE burner.
I am now fairly sure that it is my kernel config that is not correct for burning DVD via SATA and or
something else in terms of the new libata stuff is screwed up.
It is not the DVD writer, tried 2 brand new (LG & Samsung)
It is not the media, it burns fine on IDE writer and under windoze
It is definitely something to do with the fact it is SATA, as I have two identical boxes, one
IDE burner the other SATA
So unless someone can tell me where I am going wrong in my kernel, or otherwise
I have to assume that Gentoo can not burn DVD+R on an Asus KV8 amd64 MB with a SATA DVD burner.
And the fact the no one can offer an explanation makes me believe even more this might be the case _________________ No great thing is created suddenly. - Epictetus (A.D.200) |

There are many kernel options you don't need.
If you have an AHCI SATA (lspci) in
-> Serial ATA (prod) ...
select just AHCI SATA support |

Not too sure, what do you suggest based on this?
I tried deleting all PATA and as many other SATA options as I could in the kernel and leaving only
the Via SATA (rebuilt 7 times) as I believe you can get conflicts, however no joy, only eventually
succeeded in breaking the kernel.

try playing aroun with hdparm (that's the one, right?)
you're pprobably missing some udma settng that's slowing it down to the point of an undetectable underrun...

Disabling every except AHCI SATA Support renders system un-bootable, it
needs ATA SFF Support to at least boot from SATA HD, I selected VIA SATA Support only
to get it to work, but still corrupted coasters.
One thing I noticed when using k3b, after burning a dvd, when looking media info, it
showed some info about the media under the ISO9660 file-system part when I burn on my IDE
burner on my other box.
On this SATA burner, although k3b is happy that it is burnt successfully, there is no ISO9660 media info,
does this mean anything? _________________ No great thing is created suddenly. - Epictetus (A.D.200) |

From your lspci, your via chipset is not AHCI, so you need the SFF support.
I've seen some via+sata issues while searching the internet.
Do you have pata (ide) slots on your mb? You can use a sata to pata/ide adapter for your sata dvd drive.
Or a sata pci adapter with a promise or other than via chipset. |

Yes I do have IDE slots, I will give that a try, thanks did not even cross my mind.
I suppose because I was hoping to continue going forward in technology rather than
backwards
Any ideas if the developers are aware of these problems and if they are likely to be
solved sometime in the near future? _________________ No great thing is created suddenly. - Epictetus (A.D.200) |

Strange part is, when I first installed the converter it worked, load media wrote a session, closed k3b
mounted dvd, browsed dvd. I then tried to write to same (multi session) dvd again, failed with same error as
above, now it fails all the time on burning.

Does the DVD drive share the ide/pata slot? Did you set the master/slave jumper?
Try to burn at a lower speed.
Or use the old ide drivers instead of libata. |

It is a SATA -> IDE converter card, so the SATA DVD burner plugs into the card with a
SATA cable, the card then plugs into the IDE primary slot.
SATA DVD burner do not have master/slave jumpers.
I will try your other two recommendations, thanks.
By the way how does one "refresh" the devices in a system? I ask because when k3b
bombs on the burn the DVD drive is now no longer available, cant mount, unmount, eject. _________________ No great thing is created suddenly. - Epictetus (A.D.200) |
