What is the CDLOGIN?
I am booting from the live cd and it asks for a login password, but none of my usernames work. What causes this? It is sporadic. |

The password is : ********
But seriously, you need to set the password using the "passwd" command if you want to login on another terminal (or remotely) |

That is the problem. I can't reliably get a command prompt. I have had the system up and running in the past but since I made some changes to the kernel I have not been able to run the system from the cd nor a regular boot.
When I put in the CD I never get a chance to change the passwd. It is very weird I can reboot it a few times and eventually I get a normal command prompt. There is no aparent reason why it changes. If I use the passwd command ad them reboot It may or may not ask for the cdlogin.
I am still unable to boot without the CD. I have followed suggestions in the forum https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=77391 and re-re-compiled the kernel but on boot I still get an error about modules.dep being older than /lib/???/module.dev. (I can't recall the actual error as I am at work now). From what I can tell it can't find certain (or any) modules since the recompile.
This whole situation worries me as I have a server up and running on gentoo. If I am forced to recompile the kernel for some reason I am scared I may have this same problem. I can't have an important system disabled since my work depends on it. I need concrete solution for this problem.
Thanks, |
