Just emerged xfree and kde.. after hours and hours, i type kdm and get this:

Obvisouly, the image is too large for my screen. How would I go about fixing it? Here's my XF86Config file:

I have one suggestion you might try. Could you be running on a lower resolution and in fact be panning round a virtual screen? As you are configuring X for a laptop screen, I would suggest just setting one resolution for each colour depth, i.e. do (for a 1024x768 screen)

If that doesn't work, you could try using a different desktop manager (such as XDM). Good luck!

| It is your XF86Config file. You have the virtual desktop thingy enabled. Try running XF86Config and be sure to disable that option. |

Just modify the existing file you have.

If that is your config file then there isn't anything related to virtual size enabled in it. You need to check if xfree is using some other config file as well.
If you had it enabled it would look like this:
