I was trying to make fetchmail work for me, but I'm completely lost. I don't know where to start. I emerged fetchmail and it keeps telling me, that no mailservers have been specified !!!
Ok, I found out, that I need a SMTP server (MTA) on my machine, so I emerged maildrop, ... BUT WHAT NOW ????
Can plz anyone help me ??? Thanks in advance !!! |

I use webmin to configure fetchmail.
You have to setup a .fetchmailrc file that contains the server user and password you want it to fetch from. Protocol can also be specified. Man fetchmail for the format |

Try running fetchmailconf.
I've found it very easy to use. |

Hi,
Just to confuse things a little more, it is also possible to use procmail (emerge procmail) as an MTA. Ofcourse then you need to learn howto use procmail, or perhaps you already do?
Cheers,

Ok, you made it !!! I am confused !!!
For now, I made the following:
fetchmail gets the mails,
maildrop (whatever it should do? Sending E-Mails, right?),
procmail (I don't know why I emerged this one, maybe you can tell me!?),
vm-pop3d so that users can login with pop3 procotol, right?
And now? Fetchmail works, I think. I configured it and added the pop3 accounts to fetch the data from and with "fetchmail -d0" I tried it and it worked. Well he pulled the mails...
And now, my problem:
How can I make user login with pop3 protocol into the server and get their mails ? I thought vm-pop3d was the one to this for me, but ... I can NOT authenticate !!!
I connect with telnet on port 110, send "USER myuser" and the I become "+OK" so I send "PASS mysecretpass" and he says "-ERR" !!! I know this is the right password I set it only ONE minute ago !!!!
Can anyone help me ? How can I make the programms communicate with each other ? Do I need any other programms to make that run ?
Thanks in advance, you are really great ! |

Ah I see,
Yeah 'procmail' is used to filter incoming messages into a mailbox, or to automatically forward/reply to incoming mail. But this probably ISN'T useful for you, its handy for mail which is to be read local on the computer. Sorry bout that, I didn't realise you're setting POP3 and the rest. And unfortunately I ain't used POP3 servers.
Goodluck,

So, can anyone help me with the authentication problem?
I read, that "authdaemeond" is needed for this, correct? So I emerged it, started it => no effect. Still not working ! |

mshack,
I would take a look at this first user doc, http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/virt-mail-howto.xml for a suggested mail setup. I know there is at least one other walkthrough in the Tips & Tricks section of the forum. A browse through the first few pages of posts will find one for you, or a search.
Once you've gone through that, check this out: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/guide-to-mutt.xml for info on fetchmail, procmail, etc. for client apps.
Both docs are very helpful. _________________ Linux: The best text adventure game ever. |
