For DE: KDE has the most amount of customization. There are lots of arguments against KDE-4.* so you will probably need to evaluate your requirements. KDE-3.5* may suite you better if you want less (nasty) surprises.

For WM: FVWM has the most amount of customization ( I personally believe that the extent of the customization is limited to your imagination), but you will lose out on the integrated feel of a DE. Also on the down side, FVWM is quite hard to customize.

Somewhere in between lies enlightenment-DR17. It has lots of (easily accessible) customization options, but it is not a DE.

I think he means the X Window System. (Or, are you pulling our legs?)

freestylelaws, all of these DEs and WMs (including KDE, Gnome, XFCE, Enlightenment, ...) are built on top of X. You can't have them unless you install X. Now, you can have X without another DE or WM, but I don't think you want to. :)

ohh ok. How simplified is X Windows System? When I installed Gnome it had made my mouse "jumpy" and would jump to the top right when I would lift off the pad and put finger back on to mover further across the screen. This is probably a kernel issue but I have susption is started with Gnome

Well, X has a small built-in window manager called twm. Follow Gentoo's guide on the topic, The X Server Configuration HOWTO if you want to look at it. However, quoting from the guide:
Quote:
If you see an ugly, loathsome, repulsive, deformed window manager, that's twm.
I don't think you'll like it. :P

That said, X drives the mouse, not Gnome. It's likely you have a driver or hardware issue that'll have to be solved independent of your DE/WM choice.

Oh ok thanks!

Do you have any idea about the Mouse thing? I am going to reinstall Gentoo right now and was also wondering how I would go about getting the latest .30 kernel because it seems the latest one it picked up yesterday was .29

You probably want to avoid the unstable kernels (all gentoo-sources 2.6.30 kernels are marked unstable right now) unless you know that a specific issue you're having is addressed.

What does "lspci" or "lsusb" show as your mouse hardware?

It's a symantec touch pad on an asus m51sn. It has been the only time I have ever seen it glitch. Even works in the UNIX parted Magic GUI. I would tell you more but I am currently unpacking a stage3 for a new install

What are you sorry about? :P

@OP: I wasn't pulling any of your legs ;) I seriously didn't think you were speaking of X (as in X.org) and a DE in the same sense :D

No, it's an issue with most synaptics drivers and the sensitivity of the touchpad. Not a lot you can do about it.

As to your non-sequitur, the X *Window* System (note how it's not plural) compares to Gnome in the same way your blood does to your veins -- although you don't need a window manager to use graphical programs, not starting one will leave you buggered after you've opened a few apps.
