Hi.

Right now i have a Windows XP box i use to surf internet, watch movies, and so on.
the only thing that keeps me from installing Gentoo on the box is that all my secret files are on that box. and i have the file encrypted with 1344 bit triple blowfish cryptation. - witch i think is secure.

I use drivecrypt to secure my files. it works like this:
You create a container file witch is just a emty cryptated file.
the file can be up to 65 gb.
then you want to put files in the container, then you mount it and move the files to it like any other partition / harddisk.

I want some way to encrypt my files in Gentoo.
i really dont care if it is the whole harddisk or just the files i want encrypted.

Where do i start ?

There is alternatives to one single guide.
and that was what i was looking for.

try helping people instad of useing RTFM.

thank you.

Seems you have solved the problem, dispite the seeming hostilities would you be willing to add a link to the guide for completeness?

For the records also:

http://www.kerneli.org/index.php seems to be valid, oddly enough crypt filesystem information seems to be the title.

The mentioned post is very good, but not perfect, although using it I managed to encrypt, boot, use, decide I didnt need it, un-encrypt and contine with life.

I see little wrong with it. (some typos are there, surely, but only sane people try this sort of thing anyway).

(keyboard is fixed now, i can write in more detail)

he said "i really dont care if it is the whole harddisk or just the files i want encrypted"

the only way i know of is the full disk one so i linked him, it seemed like he haddn't searched, he said he didn't have a knopppix CD, so i told him he can download them. (90% of people probably got their Gentoo install disk and burned it themselves)

"Well... its really hard to burn a knoppix cd when you dont have a cdr.

that was ment to be information, not an attack.

sorry..

I just dont like an answer like "Ever tryed searching ?"
I always search before i ask. <- thats the golden rule ;)

well in all fairness it was a link to some help

i use the encrypted harddrive and i know how usefull it is, however i am trying to figure out a way to load 2 seperate initial ramdisk images at boot, then i can work on something really revoloutionary, but i don't think there is a way to do it, anyway good luck.

try having an encrypted partition that you mount (asks for a password when you mount it, or use encrypted CD-ROM's like i do.

Hello Mr. Hat,

I think the first thing you should do is to go into this page:
http://www.kerneli.org:8080/cryptoapi and press Guides, download the two patches.

Then emerge vanilla-sources 2.4.20 and patch it with the command:
Code:
patch -Np1 -i patchname

where you choose the right patch in the right order. Remember that you have to be in the kernel-directory (like /usr/src/linux-2.4.20)

Setup your kernel with cryptoapi and cryptoloop, remember to choose some ciphers you want, and do the usual compiling.

Then search the forums for how to create files or partitions to crypt, it involves the commands losetup (cryptoloop), mount and mkfs.
