I'm new to Gentoo, downloaded the live cd, booted it up and got to a root prompt. Everything seemed to load fine.
My question is, can I get to Gnome or KDE from the prompt?
Thanks for your help. |

as far as I know, no.
Just follow the installation guide.
Once you are done with the man stuff you can emerge X, kde-base, gnome, and whatever else. |

So the Gentoo Live CD is not like the Knoppix CD where you can run the OS off of the CD.
I'm not trying to install yet. I was trying to see if you could run it the same way you run Knoppix.
A test drive as it were. |

The knoppix cd is designed for actual regular use, while the Gentoo LiveCD is just fior the sake of installing Gentoo.
But you might be able to consider it runnign the OS off the CD, I'm not sure.
You may want to look into Gentoo GameCDs which will boot into a specific game and do have a GUI (not much of one). They are based on LiveCDs I think. |

I don't know why but for some reason I'd thought the Gentoo Live CD was bootable to a gui like Knoppix is. I'll definitely install Gentoo when I have some serious time to put into it.
While I was waiting to hear from this forum I downloaded Knoppix, ran a gui from the CD and everything worked. I then installed it (Debian) in about 20 minutes and have a very serviceable Linux install which I'm posting from now.
It's amazing how far Linux has come in such a short time. I can't wait to see what great things lie ahead. |

There exists an experimental Gentoo LiveCD that does boot directly to X and gives you a choice of Gnome, KDE, or Fluxbox as the window manager. It is way cool.
It should be on most (if not all) mirrors under the experimental/ subdirectory. It was created back in July. |

Right on, thanks for the lead. I'll go digging to see if I can find it.
I've been busy downloading all the Gentoo .iso versions I can use and one more certainly isn't going to hurt. |
