|
|
I use a pop3 server to get my mail from an external server. My email software is Kmail and my main desktop is Kde. I read the Install file for spamassasin and it looked like it needed procmail and stuff. Now what is the best solution for me here? I just want some spamkiller integrated into kmail or something like that..
Anybody got any answers?

Ever tried Mozilla Thunderbird a.k.a. Mozilla Mail? It has a built-in spam filter. After some trainig, it is as good or better than any other solution. |

I found it pretty easy to get SpamAssassin to play nice with Kmail. Do a Google for "spamassassin kmail" for directions.
I was also found it pretty easy to get Kmail to play nice with bogofilter but (maybe due to lack of sufficient training) I couldn't get bogofilter to work as well as SpamAssassin.
The filters in Kmail are really easy to program. |

This page tells you how to set up Spam Assasin to scan emails you have downloaded from a pop3 server. |

Not sure what your after. I'm tired of using filters that guess if a message is spam, then i have to review my 80 spam messages a day to see if they were classified correctly.
I set up getmail to retrieve my pop account then pipe it to Active Spam Killer. If the sender is on my "whitelist" their message is delivered to my KMail Maildir. If not, the sender gets a confirmation message. All the sender has to do is reply and they are added to the whitelist and their original message is delivered. If you don't bother to confirm, I never see your message. It's okay with me if I lose a few legit mails 'cause people don't want to confirm. You can minimize this by doing a good job on setting up your whitelist (also ask comes with a script to generate a starting whitelist).
I was using popfile to classify - and that was good. But this has been sooo much better. I don't get spam 'cause spammers don't confirm. Heck, the return address is usually forged.
I'm using ssmtp to send out confirmation messages, so you don't need a full blown MTA.
good luck,

Spam assasin is so accurate that I've never had a false positive, and I now check it rarely.
A downside of TMDA/ASK is that most, if not all spammers put fake stuff in the from and reply-to. This means when they spam the poor person whose domain they put there gets deluged with bounces from adresses that were invalid, and confirmation requests from TMDA users. I'd rather not do that to people. |
