I've a crazy problem... I've installed Gentoo on quite a few systems over the last year, mostly x86 and one (2xOpteron 240) amd64 system. However, I can't manage to install it on my new machine...

The setup consists of:I've downloaded the latest amd64 Gentoo Minimal Installation disk and got started. (I've used sata connected optical drive from another PC, and later on an old IDE connected optical drive)
  • Booting, finding an IP-address, as usual, no problems at all.
  • Partitioning the disk; no problem. (128M boot - 1024M swap - 250G root)
  • Formatting the boot (ext2) and swap: no problem.
However, after that the problems started.
Formatting the root (ext3, multiple reboots/attemps) I've gotten problems various from segmentation faults, Kernel panic (mostly). My first reaction; disk is DOA. Tried the second one, the same issues.
Thought that maybe the burned installation disk is broken. Tried to format the partitions with an amd64 Ubuntu live disk. System freezes while formatting.

So I've tried to format using an x86 disk; no problem...? Could format just fine? 8O :?:
Back to the amd64 installation, moved further downloading and untarring the stage and portage snapshot was no problem. Compiling the gentoo-sources gave me one error. Retried the compile and it worked like a charm??

But while compiling the kernel I've constantly got errors; mostly segmentation faults.

I don't think the disks are bad, as I've copied large amounds of data (250GB) from some older drives onto the new ones; this gave no problems... (using a x86 Ubuntu desktop Live cd)
I've tried different Sata operation settings in the bios; AHCI, IDE and RAID (JBOD config, 2 seperate disks). Thay all gave me the same problems.

Does anybody has any idea what's wrong? (or what I'm doing wrong for that matter :P)

it's your ram. Your ram is broken. Either that or your PSU. But if mkfs bombs out - it's usually the ram.

Why does it work just fine on x86?
I've also tested my RAM with memtest, >18hrs and that reported no errors...? (I gues an errors should show up there, isn't it?)

Gonna try to put my other RAM from my other PC in this evening, see what that does to be certain...

because it stresses your ram differently?

also - memtest does not find everything (and not everything found by memtest is an error).

Just try it. If you have a friend, ask him to lend you some ram or a psu for a couple of hours.

Of course, your cpu could be broken too - but only the 64bit parts damaged and the rest not? Very unlikely...

I'm not entirely sure because I did already formatted the partitions using an x86 Ubuntu disk (wanted ext4) but the remaining part of the installation ran _very_ smooth, not one problem at all... :D

I'll try to see if I can format some partition lateron today and post my findings. Ow, and I'll change the topic title as '[SOLVED]' if this is really solving the whole problem...

Danke sehr energyman72b, probatly I'm requesting a RMA from my hardware vendor...

Okey, formatting disks (ext3 and ext4) worked without a problem, so I'm off sending the memory for RMA...

Thanks... :)
