squirrelmail and USE="filter"

I have the postfix with amavisd-new (and clamav and spamassassin and...). Now I'm installing squirrelmain. I wonder what is the"filter" flag for? What is the difference between squirrel with and without this feature if all messages go through amavisd-new (thanks to postfix settings),

If you don't mind...
could you, please, explain to me two other flags (for dev-lang/php which is a dependency for squirrel):
1. apache2 (if apache has been previously installed -- does it change anything?)
2. spell. Spell for php?What does it mean?
