Where is this file? It is supposed to be in /etc. I read somewhere that it was eventually moved to /usr/portage/config, but my latest Portege snapshot does not have this directory. Anyone know where it is?

Hi, what build version did you use ?

In fact, that's weird.

Do you have at least something inside /etc/make.conf to start your config ?

I do, but I'd like to know the proper -march=<Insert Phenom II X4 955 here> setting. I can look up the Use flags on portege.gentoo.org

-march=native

it's the best that you can choose right now.

Also use -O2

I've usually used -O3 in the past without issue. Is something wrong with that?

Just downloaded stage3-amd64-20090716.tar.bz2 from another site (Utah U) and it is also missing make.conf.example.

in /usr/share/portage/config/make.conf right next to make.globals; /etc/make.conf.example is a symbolic link to /usr/share/portage/config/make.conf

what stage3 tarball did you use?

Thanks. Never compiled for -march=native before. From what I read, that is the optimal setting if gcc supports your CPU.

In fact, GCC detect your cpu and then it's optimised automagically :P

-march=native is only for >=gcc-4.2 I believe.

Use -O3 if you want bloated unstable binaries, otherwise use -O2. :wink:

zyko yes "man make.conf" is helpfull but without the make.conf.example I would lost if I was a newbee and it would rough even now. I used a funtoo amd64 stage3 and it has the link to make.conf.example.

now if we can get hardened up to GCC 4.x and documented, so I can take full advantage of my Phenom 9950 :)

I dare not try that move yet. Right now i have no march/mtune

Thats also for the Athlon x2 7000 series. My new 7850 BE is a little bit better than twice as fast my AMD x2 BE2300.

That was using "native". gcc looks the processor and matches it to the standard "march" settings. In my case that was amdfam10. I went ahead changed native to amdfam10 so distcc will have less trouble.

EDIT my normal edit the mistakes after I post.

If your board is am3 newegg releashed the AMD Athlon II X2 245 Regor 2.9GHz Socket AM3 65W
for 99 cents more. :cry: 2 days after I got 7850 from Fry's for $64. :lol:
