Good idea, poor implementation. That site definitely needs a better pipe. |

and the games-mods catagory needs to be nuked - it's about as saying as apps-stuff.
it says nothing about the type of game - and it was kinda unamusing to have to retag the Fortune-mod stuff from games-mod to app-misc (or rather irrelvant stuff in terms of games) - since someone just marked them without knowning what the package contained.
So PLEASE don't mark something unless you are 100% sure what the package is. |

game-mods? Modifications? Or modules?
fortune-mod probably should go to app-entertainment or entertainment-jokes or entertainment-misc... |

pipe is fine, code was bugger ... accidently had a mysql query in a tight forloop when it was supposed to be outside ... should be a lot faster now |

I don't like the 'games-action' category.
It's too vague. It overlaps with games-arcade, games-platform, and games-sport (the latter 2 not being there yet). _________________ Want Free games?

After a bit of thought, I've added the games-simulation category (sports simulations etc). _________________ Want Free games?

one question that has come up with the games team is how to handle freeware/shareware/games-you-need-cd ...
one idea i had was to utilize local USE flags (games-shareware) but that seems to be pretty bunk ...
another idea i had was to put warning messages in pkg_setup and pkg_postinst ... not sure about this ...
a third idea comes up because of this website ... someone made 'games-demos' ... i kind of like it, the only problem is that we have demos for fps's, puzzles, etc... it seems a little odd to lump them together ... |

currently we append -demo to the demos if I'm not mistaken.
and we have a license field to handle the rest - if the license is shareware fx. you could add a warning pre install about remembering to stick to the license (needs a URL to the terms of usage) |

There are 8 MUD clients (that i could find) in portage, maybe they should have their own category? Or should they just be placed in rpg or something.
The clients:
gmudix
gnome-mud
kmuddy
mcl
mudix
tintin
tf
ytin
EDIT: I added the games-mud category and added these games to it.

also, rather than moving humor related material (manpages/cowsay/fotune) to app-doc/app-misc, i think it's better off in games-misc ... |

What have they to do with games ? They are funny, but not game-related at all. Maybe something like app-fun or app-entertainment ? |

nothing really but i think they're closer to games than applications
i think an 'app-fun' or 'app-entertainment' category is just fancy talk for 'misc' |

the idea of a 'funny' category isnt bad ... problem is we want to put manpages in there, so we couldnt use 'app-' ...
how about games-misc ?
or maybe a 'games-funny' ... |

hmm, how about combining 'games-rts' and 'games-strategy' into just 'games-strategy' ?
also, the 'games-simulation' seems to have issues ... we can put sports games like baseball/pool in there, but what about the games that *are* simulations ? |

There seems to be quite a few interpreters in portage:
Exult (Ultima 7)
FreeCraft (WarCraft/StarCraft)
FreeSCI (Sierra SCI)
Frotz (Infocom)
Kwest (Infocom)
ScummVM (Lucasarts SCUMM)
Zoom (Infocom)
FreeSCI and Kwest are in app-emulation, the rest are in app-games. They should probably all go in the same place (games-emulation).
The thing is, though, that these aren't emulators, but interpreters (re-implementations of game engines), so they should really have their own category, games-interpreter or something.
Any thoughts? |

data-funny... Too oxymoronic.
funny-data... See above.
entertainment-funny... Too long.
app-funny... Not appropriate.
games-funny... I suppose XBill goes in here too.
misc-funny... Perfect!
games-real... Simulation of real games.
games-rts... Real Time Strategy. Absorb SimCity-like things as well. Everyday, the citizens plot against me...
games-strategy... Turn-based Strategy... Not very many. |
