|
1. When you configure your kernel, the DRM guide says to NOT set DRM in menuconfig. Does this mean you still select it as a module (M), and agpgart compiled into the kernel (Y)? Or, does it mean deselect DRM entirely in menuconfig, and then emerge xfree-drm later (in either case)?
2. I have ATI 9000 Pro cards in all 3 boxes, and have downloaded all of xfree AND xfree-drm with emerge -f to /portage/distfiles. I've failed 10 times in the last week after getting almost through with the GRP type install, and genkernel, and 2 manual kernel compiles, and now am trying again, so I don't want to mess up this time. (I'm very experienced at manual kernels).
When I get to the xfree emerge, do I use:
VIDEO_CARDS="radeon" emerge -k xfree-drm
instead of the normal emerge -k xfree, and will this to solve my x problems? Or, is there another command I'm not aware of?
3. When emerging packages associated with xfree, do I still need to use USE="bindist" with emerge -k if I'm not doing the GRP install?
4. I can't seem to get wvdial configured, even with the Stupid Mode=1 line. Can anyone give me the correct method? It always drops the connection 2 seconds after it connects. I've followed the directions found on many websites precisely, and nothing fixes that disconnect.
I'm stuck with dialup, and am trying do a hybridized install with the 1.4 live cd and Knoppix 3.2. The only time I've ever got a gentoo install to work was with 1.4rc4 from an Mandrake 9.1 minimal install on the same Hard disk (with the great help of Puggy & Neje). This newest 1.4 GRP has given me seemingly unsolvable problems. My install cd's sumchecked on 2 different copies burnt on another box at my sisters place on dsl, so that can't be it.
5. One other problem- I can't seem to enable cdcache in the 1.4 cd1 boot options- any ideas, or what is the exact command to do this correctly. Trying to do so always leads me to drastic errors later in extracting the stage 3 tarball, and aborts the install process.
Thanks much,

I'm going to try to answer your questions, but I don't know all answers... Here we go:

Take a look at codelisting 2.4 in http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/dri-howto.xml. You must enable (Y) agpgart, and disable DRM.

Add a use flag radeon in your make.conf, and then just Code: | emerge -k xfree-drm |
Btw: you don't need to use emerge -f, emerge -k all the time, a plain emerge works fine and sometimes faster (if you get your internet connection working, that is).

Try to stop using GRP as soon as possible, so you get the most recent packages, so remove that useflag and start using emerge like the big guys
