Firmware problem

I recently ran into a problem associated, I think to udev. I update to udev-141 on Jun 29th, when I did my first reboot today, one of my usb devices wouldn't load it's firmware. Its firmware had been placed in /lib/firmware/local which was a symlink to /home/local/lib/firmware. Since I didn't have an ebuild for the firmware, I preferred to keep the files on local. When I moved the files to /lib/firmware, there was no problem. What changed, and where can I change it back?
