i recently bought a new Athlon Xp 2000+ cpu. i did a fresh install of gentoo, and chose athlon XP in kernel config but yet here is my /proc/cpuinfo
pavement:~$ cat /proc/cpuinfo
processor : 0
vendor_id : AuthenticAMD
cpu family : 6
model : 8
model name : AMD Duron(tm) Processor
stepping : 1
cpu MHz : 1466.836
cache size : 256 KB
fdiv_bug : no
hlt_bug : no
f00f_bug : no
coma_bug : no
fpu : yes
fpu_exception : yes
cpuid level : 1
wp : yes
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 mmx fxsr sse syscall mmxext 3dnowext 3dnow
bogomips : 2922.90
why is it posting as an duron cpu, and why is cpu mhz 1.4 instead of 1.6. this does not seem right to me. any ideas out there? |

have you looked closely at the writing on the core of the CPU? You might have been duped..
When the machine does the bios POST, is it calling it a Duron or Athlon?
/me searches the net for the diff in Athlons and Durons.. I'm pretty sure they have major cache size differences.. _________________ 2800+XP A7N8X FX6600GT

well i did a little research myself, and yes the bios posts an xp2000+, but looking at asus's site come to find out that my mother board only supports up to xp2100+ (model 6) the cpu i bought was an xp2000+ (model 8 ) does this make a difference? i think it may.... |

An Athlon XP 2000+ shouldn't report 1466 MHz, as your cpuinfo shows. It should be up around 1670, I believe. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure "apic" would show up in the flags of an Athlon XP 2000 as well. (it does in my 2200)
Not sure what to recommend, but I would check BIOS settings relating to bus speeds/multipliers and such. (I recently found a friend with an XP1800 1.53GHz running at 1.1 GHz due to the wrong bus speed being set in the BIOS...) |

update to the latest bios?
check the writing on the cpu... but if u do that, you prob need to re-apply thermal paste.
and now AMD is VOIDING warranty if you use any other thermal paste...
so hmmm... _________________ Kororaa install method - have Gentoo up and running quickly and easily, fully automated with an installer! |

Woah.. be carefull updateing the bios on asus boards.. I've never has so many failed bios updates and screwed bios's because of it than I have with Asus boards..
Love asus stuff.. but their bios updates suck beyond measure..
Go with the clock settings first _________________ 2800+XP A7N8X FX6600GT

meh.. I've flashed over 200 asus boards, only ever had one problem.
but I know what you mean
the fsb issue will not fix the fact that it's coming up as a duron... still worth a try.
You can only change the multiplier, if u unlocked the cpu, or it was manufactured unlocked. You obviously are not running at 100fsb, so I assume you are running at:
11 x 133fsb = 1463 Mhz = 1700+
whereas (assuming you do indeed have a 2000+) you should be:
12.5 x 133fsb = 1662 Mhz = 2000+
also, durons only run at 100fsb, and to a maximum of 1.3ghz, so it COULD be that you bought a duron and overclocked the fsb to 133 instead of 100. HOWEVER durons do NOT have 256k cache, only 128 - and cpuinfo shows 256k.
even if this was the case it would be running at 1662Mhz (same speed as a 2000+. This is possible because most mainboards do not have a 13x multiplier, only 12.5/13.
12.5/13x 100fsb = 1.3ghz
so this may have become:
12.5 / 13x 133fsb = 1662Mhz
but you have 1463, so I doubt this is the issue
So the bios update may fix it from being recognised as a duron, instead of athlon.
and perhaps the cpu came unlocked, in which case you just need to change the multiplier from 11 to 12.5.
good luck, let us know what you find! _________________ Kororaa install method - have Gentoo up and running quickly and easily, fully automated with an installer! |

ok i was running the latest bios
so i flashed to the latest beta and it fixed the duron issue, but even when i choose the 1665 option in cpu speed it stays at 1466. i still think its a model issue. im running an asus a7m266 and asus support says it only supports model 6's. im not sure what differences pertain to each model. what do you guys think? |
