Code:
(EE) Failed to load module "type1" (module does not exist, 0)

Follow this steps:

1º Put in your make.conf this lines
Code:
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev keyboard mouse"
VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia"

2º In your make.conf, be sure you have the "hal" use flag in your USE variable.

3º Delete your xorg.conf and use this
Code:
Section "Files"
EndSection

Section "Module"
    Load           "dbe"
    Load           "extmod"
    Load           "type1"
    Load           "freetype"
    Load           "glx"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier     "Monitor0"
    VendorName     "Unknown"
    ModelName      "Unknown"
    HorizSync       28.0 - 33.0
    VertRefresh     43.0 - 72.0
    Option         "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier     "Device0"
    Driver         "nvidia"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier     "Screen0"
    Device         "Device0"
    Monitor        "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth    24
    SubSection     "Display"
        Depth       24
    EndSubSection
EndSection

4º Make a system upgrade
Code:
emerge --deep --update --newuse world

Can you paste the result of

i made a mistake and switched my system profile from multilib to non-multilib which left me no other option than to reinstall my whole system. well so its not entirely right that i switched from 32bit to 64bit - i just switched from a 64bit multilib system to a 64bit only one.

the only change i made was to disable IA32 emulation in kernel.

Try changing your monitor section to read
Code:

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier     "Monitor0"
        VendorName     "Viewsonic"
        ModelName      "VG2230wm"
        HorizSync      24.0 - 82.0
        VertRefresh    50.0 - 85.0
        DisplaySize    475 297
        Option         "DPMS"
EndSection

The horiz and vert sync rates are from Viewsonic's web page, and I used the units app to convert the display size in inches to mm.
Use with the following video config (for testing, add your own options back later)
Code:

Section "Device"
   Identifier  "Card0"
   Driver      "nvidia"
   Option      "UseEdid" "False"
   Option      "DPI" "90x90"
EndSection

The "UseEdid" here may help with your problem, I've also had trouble with nvidia identifying the EDID info, and my system is 32-bit. I calculated the DPI based on the display sizes in the monitor section.

Regardless of whether or not this works, you may want to
Code:

emerge --emptytree --ask --verbose world

Good luck with the emerge. One other thing I thought of, is that maybe nvidia (with EDID turned off) cannot pick a resolution despite the monitor specifications being explicitly ... specified. Next time round, try adding your modeline entry back in, with the EDID still disabled.

As a sanity check, grab a copy of the system rescue CD (http://www.sysresccd.org) and boot from it. See if it sets up your display properly.

i finished the emerge but sadly it doesnt work - same errors.

640x480 is the most i can get.....

will try the systemrescue cd now

EDIT: system rescue doesnt work either - xorg says no screens found

EDIT2: i did 'Xorg -configure' and used that config - worked instantly - i replaced the input device sections with the ones from my config, tbh i cannot see any differences but it works so i will settle with this now. marking thread solved - thanks for your help guys.
