ok this is the message:
Quote: | * Messages for package media-libs/libv4l-0.5.3:
*
* libv4l includes wrapper libraries for compatibility and pixel format
* conversion, which are especially useful for users of the gspca usb
* webcam driver in kernel 2.6.27 and higher.
*
* To add v4l2 compatibility to a v4l application 'myapp', launch it via
* LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib64/libv4l/v4l1compat.so myapp
* To add automatic pixel format conversion to a v4l2 application, use
* LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib64/libv4l/v4l2convert.so myapp |
i tried passing those code lines before xawtv, camorama or mplayer but the same message comes up that i dont have a /dev/video0, which i dont, i have a /dev/video1394-0.
what to do? is there a configuration step i missed to create that location? |

Hello,
Please verify that your user are on 'video' group's.
Kernel : verify that all v4l are defined (modules are suffisant) , v4l USB too and verify alsa settings about usb sound
make.conf : emerge ufed
ufed are one utility to see all USE flags defined by your profile (eselect profile list to see ) and in your make.conf
This utility present all USE flags with graphical interface and you be able to see ebuild use a flag and what he enable or disable.
After change :
emerge -uDN world --with-bdeps y
revdep-rebuild
Attention some application needs a route under your firewall/router (port/ip to your pc) to have acces with webcam |

Hello,
I just install skype for test, it's work in my side
verify that your user are under 'video' and 'usb' groups
usb -> access usb peripheral
video -> access webcam peripheral
Verfiy your kernel config,
Enable : video for linux ; enable video for linux api 1 (build in kernel)
under video capture adapters ; enable all (modules) and under v4l usb enable all (modules)
I don't know wich modules are used by your peripheral, when it's work you are able to remove unwanted modules
recompile your kernel, install and reboot
Verify your use flags : libv4l2, v4l, v4l2, ....
To be sure, emerge ufed
ufed help you to see all use flags and select or deselect it, it provide a small description of use flags and major package impacted by this use flag
for your info my emerge --info

Update your system (emerge -uDN world --with-bdeps y)
I use --with-bdeps y to be sure that all package (include binary deps) are covered
Try skype (without preload) |

the quickcam module is gspca_stv06xx and it is loaded. i used ufed (wonderful utility) and added libv4l2, v4l, v4l2 to my useflags.
i still get no webcam device seen by skype or anything else for that matter, no change from my previous posts... if anyone has any other ideas i would be very appreciative. |

I used the uvc module so I think mine was a bit different. I also had to add people to the video group in order for apps to see the camera. works under skype very well. |
