Hello all,

Excuses if this has been answered elsewhere. I just got finished installing Gentoo on my Athlon XP system. I started from stage 1 and everything seems to work fine until I tried to mount a CDROM, which failed. After checking around a little bit, it seems Gentoo didn't create the block devices for /dev/hdc or hdd, or /dev/cdom & /dev/cdrom1, depending on what it's supposed to be. Also, the /dev/cdroms directory is empty. Am I supposed to create these myself? If so, can I get a quick primer on block device creation?

Here's my info:
Athlon XP 2600+
Asus ATN8X-X
DVD drive - master on 2nd channel
CDR drive - slave on 2nd channel

Negative. devfs does this for you -- if they're not in /dev, then the kernel doesn't see 'em.

Check the output of `dmesg` to make sure that the kernel saw your second IDE controller on boot.

Also, I think this can happen if you've enabled SCSI emulation but not enabled SCSI CD-ROM support.

Yup, that was it. Didn't think I'd need it since I don't have SCSI cdroms. A quick recompile & reboot and everything is fine...

thanks!
