check your /etc/resolv.conf and etc/hosts and /etc/conf.d/hostname and /etc/conf.d/net

and redo the stage3 steps from the above post.
Code:
cd /
cp -r /etc /etc.backup
wget http://dev.funtoo.org/linux/gentoo/i686/stage3-i686-current.tar.bz2
tar xjpf stage3-i686-current.tar.bz2
cp -r /etc.backup /etc
emerge --sync
emerge -uDN world
etc-update

dhcpcd:
Code:
eth0: dhcpcd 4.0.13 starting
eth0: broadcasting for a lease
eth0: timed out
eth0: trying to use old lease in '/var/lib/dhcpcd/dhcpcd-eth0.lease'
eth0: checking 169.254/77/92 is available on attached networks
eth0: using IPv4LL address 169.254.77.92

After chaning those files. DHCP was working just fine, then all of a sudden it stopped.

what should /etc/conf.d/net and /etc/resolv.conf have in them?

I think that was covered in Chapters 3 and 7 of the Gentoo Handbook.

You can copy the resolv.conf from your ubuntu.

Once your networking works correctly, then you can get your emerge working with the steps from the above post. :P

I click the repair button on windows to fix the network. I disable and enable the adapter, that doesn't work. I restart the computer and DHCP lives once again. I hate windows. Everything in the world needs a restart. I installed two freakin updates today and it wanted a restart. UGH!!! "Google has loaded. Please restart your computer to view this web page"

Anyway it works.

tar: ./proc/.keep: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

now i cant chroot into it "chroot: cannot run command `/bin/bash': No such file or directory"

Is that the output of chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash?

Are you sure you mounted your filesystems correctly?

Did you follow the Alternative Installation Section of the Handbook, specifically Cahpter 5. Installing Gentoo from an existing Linux distribution?

Could be that your Gentoo installation is hosed.

What's the output of ls /mnt/gentoo/bin/bash

When extracting stage3

tar: ./proc/.keep: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

Yes I successfully chroot'ed

I might just start over, again. I will only do this if I can compile from my desktop computer, both are x86. Ill install to a flash drive, and copy the files over to my netbook when im done? my processor is just too damn slow for me to continue compiling the same packages over and over again. the kernel took about 2 hours.

Did you flush your environment during chroot successfully, update your environment and source your /etc/profile?

... also what is the output of cat /proc/mounts

I'm not sure what's causing the tar problem.

What happens if you exit the chroot cd over to /mnt/gentoo, untar and chroot again :?:
Code:
exit
tar xjvpf stage3*

Does tar work that way?

It stopped with "tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors"

and i noticed the error "tar: ./proc/.keep: Cannot open: No such file or directory " being in there too, but not immediately before the last error.

Is it possible to configure gentoo on my desktop and then move the files from there to my netbook with no problem? how? i feel it'll be a lot easier because i wont have to fix previous mistakes i have made this installation. and if i compile on my desktop it wont take so long.

There are some tools you can use to speed things up: ccache and distcc

You can also look at custom stage4 :P

Wheres the step to compile my kernel? That's no fun, after I already learned how to do it on my Dell Mini!

So it's either quick n easy stage 4, or long and time consuming stage 3? I cant just do a stage 3 from my desktop and transfer files?

Following this thread it looks like you are bouncing all over the place. I would strongly recommend wiping the partition and starting over page 1 in the handbook. There aren't any gentoo stage 4's that exist, unless you create one of your own. The easiest thing to do is use stage 3 and carefully follow the handbook without skipping any steps. Once you have your base system up and running you can worry about xorg, and then transferring files.

BTW - You should save your conigs to streamline the process next time. If you don't want to reconfigure your kernel save /usr/src/linux/.config somewhere. If you lost that config boot your system and execute `zcat /proc/config.gz > mykernelconfig`, which you can copy to /usr/src/linux/.config when you are ready. That is probably the only config I would grab and redo the rest since they are less time consuming to generate.

You're wrong, if you would read the post above my previous post you'll learn that stage4 does exist.

and i agree with mikegpitt, it looks like sth. is really broken there, i would start again with a freshinstall.

good luck !

Ok here's the latest update:
I kept my old kernel
Formatted my partition
Installed stage3, and Portage.
Updated portage (of course)
Compiled a broken kernel, and decided to use my old kernel.
Installed xorg.
Tried to launch, failed, and was told to recompile my kernel.
So I did, I used pappy's seeds which compiled another kernel that doesn't work
Emerge'd udev (wasn't sure if it was installed), and did rc-update
Tried launching Xorg again (knowing it probably wouldn't work)

Here is my current log
Code:

If I cant get any real help with installing my kernel (pappy seeds didnt help AT ALL, didnt understand what i was suppose to do), that would be appreciated. If I don't get help, Im just going to do genkernel and figure out this mess later when I have a working system. Which would be easier for the moment anyway?
