|

New problem. Since I was having issues with the cd image I tried to install via the internet using Kubuntu to boot the system from the CD. I get as far as doanloading the stage 3 tarball and an error from Links saying that permission is denied when I try to save the file to /mnt/gentoo. They say to use the "sudo" command when in Kubuntu to act as the root amdinistrator and this works for most issues but still does not let be write to the directory that I want. It looks like Kubuntu logs in as a limited user and will not give any write access to the folders I create...any ideas on how to deal with this. I would rather not install Kubuntu on the hard drive and have to delete is later.
Thanks

Last time I used Knoppix to install Gentoo, I needed to login as root like this.
You may be able to do the same thing with Kubuntu. |

I tried using the command sudo su - and it successfully logged me in as root@ubuntu but it did not change the permission denied issue. I also tried booting from Knoppix 2.86 and it gets to a root prompt but goes right into a shutdown. I currently trying to download Knoppix 3.9 to see if there is any difference. |

http://www.sysresccd.org is always a good choice for a livecd.
You can boot it in either 32/64 bit mode, and it is gentoo based, booting it allows you to 'see' your hardware work with recent gentoo kernels as well as providing a good X11 live environment to work from. |

I second that.
Nothing beats sysrescuecd.
Gerard. _________________ To install Gentoo I use sysrescuecd.Based on Gentoo, has firefox to browse Gentoo docs and mc to browse (and edit) files.
The same disk can be used for 32 and 64 bit installs.
You can follow the Handbook verbatim.

This worked. The rescue cd had some minor issues but I got it working and was able to download the files and save them to /mnt/gentoo!
Thanks |

Amazingly, it even works nicely for things besides doing gentoo installs!
Saved my arse a few weeks back; pops' old Win2k desktop ended up with a corrupted registry after a power outage, rescuecd allowed me to get in and patch the registry up from a backup |
