1. when extracting the stage 3 tarball, lots of files didnt get extracted.
XXXXXXX : copied 0byte out of YYYYYYYbytes
skipped to next tar header
etc
2. during chroot, error message
#chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
/bin/bash : no such file ordirectory
my installation process sorta stalls there.
is it possible to to a stage 1 or stage 2 without net?
stage 1 + grp? stage 2 + grp? _________________ n00b alert! |

Make sure you mounted your "/ " partion on "/mnt/gentoo" do "df -h" and you should get a size report of your root partion. "cd" to /mnt/gentoo then "cp /mnt/cdrom/gentoo/stage? /mnt/gentoo" Untar the stage?. When your done untarring "rm stage?".
It really sounds like you didnt mount your partion or that you mounted your boot partion and ran out of space. Been there done that

I guess defunct stage tarball or defunct downloaded ISO. Also make sure you select the correct LiveCDs for your architecture (i.e. not athlon-xp for a pentium ) |

i got the 31072003 athlon from linuxiso (which redirected to the gentoo ftp)
i have tried 5 partition
(64mb /boot, 1024mb swap,1024mb /,5120mb /usr, and ~20gb /home)
as well as 3 partition (as is instructed by the install guide)
(64mb /boot, 1024mb swap, rest /)
both produced the same results.
will try the cp trick later
or do you think i may have gotten a bad iso? and should redownload? _________________ n00b alert! |

If yiou setup your partions with "cfdisk" check them with fdisk. If there is a "+" after the blocks number, excluding Extended, then your disk partions are screwed and will cause many strange and wonderfull errors If its on your boot partion grub wont install. Ifs its on your / then you may not be able to change root and/or possibly untar wont work. Also Check your bios setup for your drives and make sure that LBA is on. If your md5sums check it is unlikely that your downloads are corrupt

well, i checked during fdisk and all my partition (except goot) as a "+" thingy.
the thing is, no matter how many times i repartition, the "+" remains there.
how do i fix it?
and i have gotten a little progress. i have manage to chroot, i htink (no error message) but when i try
#env-update
bash : env-update no such command (or somehting like that)]
what now? _________________ n00b alert! |
