Mplayer: screenshots and DVD subtitles

If I play .avi file with "mplayer -ass -vf ass,screenshot,expand=osd=1 [file]", there are subtiles on screenshots. But it doesnt work with DVDs. I guess it has something to do with -ass, because it doesn't change anything when playing DVDs. When I play .avi file with it, the substitles are completely different. What command line options or filters I need?

AFAIK, DVD subtitle display can not be modified by mplayer. -ass only applies to other (often external) subtitles which come in an external file.
