My system isn't recognizing my cd/dvd burner/reader. If I put in a CD or a DVD, burned or comercially made, it doesn't show up in /mnt/cdrom (which is where /etc/fstab is supposed to mount them). Furthermore, there is no /dev/dvd or /dev/cdrom or /dev/sr0 in /dev. I've enabled all of the IDE kernel modules for my CD drive, so they should (in theory) be there.

I'm running the 2.6.29 kernel, and my optical drive is an HP dvd1035 using IDE.

So I'm assuming you already have

Code:

Symbol: PATA_MARVELL [=n]                                                                                   │
  │ Prompt: Marvell PATA support via legacy mode                                                                │
  │   Defined at drivers/ata/Kconfig:446                                                                        │
  │   Depends on: ATA && ATA_SFF && PCI                                                                         │
  │   Location:                                                                                                 │
  │     -> Device Drivers                                                                                       │
  │       -> Serial ATA (prod) and Parallel ATA (experimental) drivers (ATA [=y])                               │
  │         -> ATA SFF support (ATA_SFF [=y])

Rather than one of the old IDE drivers.

Whenever you pop something in the drive, you should see something useful in dmesg - any joy in the last 100 lines or so of dmesg output?

When I put a disc (either a CD or DVD) in the drive, nothing happens in dmesg or elsewhere.

Edit: and yes, that is the driver that I'm using. I also enabled the Intel driver in that section since I have an Intel motherboard. And I have SCSI CD support enabled also.
