I get an error when booting, saying that it cannot boot becuase i dont have devfs installed or built in or whatever. How do i ammend the situation? |

It just says that i need devfs built into the kernel for gentoo too boot |

...no, you don't, I know this for a fact because I was using Gentoo for a long time without DevFS in the kernel. _________________ AMD Athlon XP 1700+

well, then how do i fix it when it says it cant boot because it needs devfs built into the kernel
and then it doesnt boot?

You do need devfs to use Gentoo normally. If you don't want to use devfs, add gentoo=nodevfs as kernel parameter.
But since that is only at your own risk, I advise the OP to activate devfs in his kernel. |

Sorry if I'm teaching you to 'suck eggs', but in order to get around this error you can boot off the LiveCD, mount and chroot to your /mnt/gentoo directory. Then you can configure and build DevFS into your kernel.
Check out http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-install.xml#doc_chap16_pre6 for information on what flags need to be set in the kernel config. Don't forget to set 'Prompt for Development....' otherwise the DevFS support won't be an option. |
