check the systemlog /var/log/messages if anything is there if you plug in the mouse
The mouse is ok and works on another OS or Computer?
check lsusb output.
Check your kernel and check if your mouse works with a live-cd, if yes, then there is something wrong in your kernel or settings.
hald / dbus / udev started? |

Well, if you want to save time go for a) genkernel or b) a kernel seed. I also used a kernel seed, because I didnt find the right settings for my esata interface and after I took a kernel seed, esata worked.
Or, ask, use the internet, use lspci, lsusb, .... But thats time consuming. Check if your mouse works on another linux distro oder livecd then you know your system is misconfigured or go for the fastest way, use a kernel seed or genkernel. |

I know it works on other GNU/Linuxes. I think I have a genkernel somewhere... I'll try that and get back to you. |

well now the laptop doesn't start at all... I guess the mouse isn't the real problem at hand. |

Sad news :/

if you have properly usb handling in kernel, even the mouse isn't recognize, it should be powered.
I think the mouse should be powered even without any usb drivers. I don't think power is handled by any drivers and i think only disabling usb in bios could remove that ability to power devices. |
