This has been bothering me for ages, years literally, but seems to be completely random and I've never asked about it.

Sometimes, when I try to save a file in nano, I get an error in the status bar, like this:

Code:
Error writing backup file /home/i92guboj/backups/nano/!home!i92guboj!server!www!bbclone!conf!config.php~: operation not permitted

Some other times it doesn't bother me, and I can save the file without any problem. It's strange, the driver is not full, there are free i-nodes, etc. etc. Sometimes fails, sometimes it works. Quite annoying, overall when you have done some intensive modifications into a config file and you have to close nano without saving the file because of this silly bug or whatever it is.

Has anyone experienced the same problem?

Thanks for reading.

... and are you the owner (or do you have write permission) of the file you are modifying?

Yes to both. As said, the problem is completely random, or so it seems.

Yes. Besides, it's not a recent thing. It has happened randomly for a long time now, in different fs's, and only with nano.

Try strace'ing the nano process from another window. Maybe you can record its system calls when this issue happens again.

I am trying that. If I only had a solid way to reproduce it... I can only wait until it bites again
