How can I edit grub to load my kernel with a different run level that does not start a lot of the other services. Have been working on an issue that causes my machine to lock up when XDM starts now and then. I can fix it, but I need an easy way to boot with a different run level if it re-occurs or I have similar problems.

What you are probably looking for is softlevels. You can create a new directory under /etc/runlevels and symlink (or use rc-update) to add in the services you want. You will need to pass in the parameter softlevel=my-new-runlevel-name to your kernel string when you boot.

i think on the kernel line in grub you can put: "init=3" or whatever runlevel you want to boot into.
