My computer (p3 700 on a p3b-f) often crashes, when I emerge software => machine check exeption, cpu context corrupt. Sometimes after 5 min, sometimes after hours, sometimes it just works fine. It seems to me, that it does not depend on the file, which is beeing compiled at the moment. I removed all hardware, which is not needed to run my pc, I even removed all "noname" ramchips leaving only the ones from infineon in it, but still the same. Interesting is, that if I use the livecd to boot my system, swap with chroot to the installed version of gentoo, I have never had any problems (perhaps just a coincident, as i said, sometimes it works fine). If it's not a coincident, then there must be something wrong with my self-made kernel, because the one from the livecd obviously works better. So, if you know, what's the problem here, please tell me........

This is just a blind guess, but your computer might be overheating
(CPU, Motherboard/Northbridge, RAM)

check temperatures while compiling, if you burn your fingers you can be assured that it's overheating.

Sounds like hardware thing but could, of course, be a kernel problem. Try to disable pre-emptible patch, any low-latency things and stuff like that and see if it helps.

Beeing that random I bet my shoes that its a hardware problem.. Run memtest86 over night and check temperature of all components as mentioned in a previous post.
