|
|
I have been running a samba server to support microsoft clients to network printers for years now. Recently -- probably due to gentoo updates -- printing broke. I can no longer print from a micsosoft box thru the samba server to the cups printer. It used to work. Maybe the problem is with microsoft updates, and maybe with gentoo updates, or even a bit of both.
When I print from a MS box, it just falls into a black hole. No error message from the microsoft box, but nothing shows up on the cups server, and no errors from either samba or cups on the gentoo box that runs both.
The /var/log/samba/log/smbd file is full of lines like: Code: |
[2009/09/06 15:54:02, 0] printing/print_cups.c:cups_connect(69)
Unable to connect to CUPS server /var/run/cups/cups.sock:631 - No such file or directory
|
Yet cups works fine from a gentoo box with the command: Code: | lp -h daniel -d lp foo.ps |
Anybody else seeing this?
Also, the latest firefox update broke printing from firefox. There is no way to specify what printer to go to, at least not that I can find. There used to be a place on the print setup menu where you could specify the command to use for printing, but they either moved it someplace secret, or eliminated it altogether.
Furthermore, when I print-to-file in firefox, and then send the file to the printer, it prints, but the old problem of ugly to the point of being almost unreadable fonts is back.
So, I have 3 printing problems:
1. Can't print from microsoft boxes. Seems like samba problem, maybe cups related.
2. Gentoo box firefox can't print except to file.
3. Gentoo firefox printing has unreadably ugly fonts.
Anybody else seeing this? Anybody know how to fix these?

Hi Moriah,
It looks like there is a new samba since last week.
So let's say, what if you downgrade samba and/or cups to their last working version.
Do you think that might work?
Code: | # genlop -e samba
* net-fs/samba
Fri May 8 18:15:23 2009 >>> net-fs/samba-3.2.11
Mon Jun 29 11:55:12 2009 >>> net-fs/samba-3.2.13-r2
Thu Jul 30 15:38:41 2009 >>> net-fs/samba-3.2.13-r2
Wed Sep 2 08:44:56 2009 >>> net-fs/samba-3.2.14 |

It might, but then I have to consider the reason *WHY* there was a new samba last week. Was it an enhancement, a bug fix, or a security vulnerability? For the first one, I would downgrade without question. For the second, I would need to know what the bug being fixed was. For the third one, I think I might want to try to live with it, which means debugging why it won't connect to cups. Its midnote now, and I need a snack, then bed. I will oook at it tomorow evening. Thanks for the observation. I need to start by looking into what changed in the 2009_09_02 release of samba. _________________ The MyWord KJV Bible tool is at http://www.elilabs.com/~myword
