Hello, I've been a gentoo user for some time now, and am constantly wondering what it'd be like to compile a kernel of my own (I currently rely on genkernel for this). There is a slight problem, though. Every time I've attempted to compile the damned thing, I always get errors, be it I forgot to add a module, or I didn't remove one. I recently acquired the Linux Kernel book ( as here : http://www.kroah.com/lkn/ ), and I'm afraid it might not be current enough to followed in full. Is there any comprehensive texts, that are current, that might give me a better idea to know what I should and should not enable, or put up as modules?

I mean this, in the sense, that reading the descriptions aren't comprehensive enough, because I've tried that, and it still, somehow, failed. ( And yes, I read every single one. I had nothing else to do :P ). Anyways, if anyone can help me, I'd be eternally grateful. ( Not really, I'm not that desperate. I'm just looking to learn 8) )

Take a look at Pappy's Kernel Seeds. There is a discussion group here:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-707499-start-400.html

The discussion group and Pappy's website have helped a lot of people with kernel compiling.

I think, during my time with Arch Linux, I've heard of these before. I'll have to give these seeds a look. :) Thanks for the tip. While I look at these, I hope other people might give some input on their opinion of what one would need to do. :)

Thanks for the seed post :) I built my first kernel using that as a base. I am very happy with my boot time now
