Hello.

Im new here. I'm used to ubuntu where the next version keeps everything up to date and everything is preconfigured for you.

Finnally after a lot of searching the web I have properly installed gentoo and and gnome and properly started up the gnome interface.

I see in /usr/portage that there are ebuilds for gnome-2.24 and gnome-2.26.

My problem is instead of emerging gnome-2.26 gentoo chose to install 2.24. And when I try updating my system it doesn't mention gnome at all and claims everything is up to date.

For this I can't find any help on the web.

Can someone tell me how to emerge gnome-2.26.3

Thanks

GNOME 2.26 is "keyworded" for testing.

Read more in the Gentoo Handbook.

I don't understand why 2.26 is testing when it is a stable release.

Either way I read the link you sent and that seems to be what I want to do but I don't understand it.

If it told me how to enable partial testing for specific applications then I'm lost.

It would be cool if someone can spell it out for me. What exactly should I do to get gnome-2.26

I know the manual covers everything but it's hard sometimes for noobies to catch on.

Much thanks for any help.

GNOME and Gentoo have different criteria for declaring releases stable. GNOME declares releases stable when they can be safely run as binaries by major distributions like Ubuntu. Gentoo declares releases stable when they can be safely built (with various USE flags) and run by its users.

There are two ways to un-keyword GNOME 2.26:

* Make the entire Portage tree un-keyworded, by placing the following in your "/etc/make.conf" :

Code:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"

* In your "/etc/portage/package.keywords", un-keyword the GNOME 2.26.3 meta-package and all its dependencies:

Code:
gnome-base/gnome ~x86
gnome-base/libgnome ~x86
...

where "..." means you fill in the rest. One way to find out what you need to un-keyword is first un-keyword gnome-base/gnome, then try to install it and see which packages emerge complains are required but keyword-ed.

(If you are on the "amd64" platform, change "~x86" to "~amd64" in the above.)

Hope this helps!

Another quick way for testing stuff is to emerge with the following command:

Code:

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~<your arch, like x86, amd64>" emerge gnome -av

-av provides that it doesn't just start compiling but gives you the opportunity to see which packages portage selected and in which version.

For me this results in:
Code:
christian # ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge gnome -av

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds built with USE flags to satisfy "sys-auth/pambase[consolekit]".
!!! One of the following packages is required to complete your request:
- sys-auth/pambase-20090620.1 (Change USE: +consolekit)
(dependency required by "net-wireless/bluez-4.39" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "gnome-base/gvfs-1.2.3" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "gnome-base/gnome-2.26.3" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "gnome" [argument])

So I have to add the useflag consolekit. This I do by invoking emerge thus:

Code:
USE="consolekit" ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge gnome -av

Which gets me:
Code:
USE="consolekit" ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge gnome -av

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

[blocks B     ] net-wireless/bluez-libs ("net-wireless/bluez-libs" is blocking net-wireless/bluez-4.39)

So, that should work if there wasn't a blocker. Apparently bluez-libs is no longer needed by bluez-4.39 or something. So I assume I can unmerge it by
(actually I do not need it at all since I don't use bluetooth)
Code:

emerge --unmerge bluez-libs

After that you can again invoke portage by:
Code:
USE="consolekit" ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge gnome -av

And now Gnome 2.26 should build just fine.

Thank You........That did the trick.

I did the first suggestion

Code:
* Make the entire Portage tree un-keyworded, by placing the following in your "/etc/make.conf" :

Code:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~amd64"

Then I also had to add consolekit to my Use Flags and at this moment everything is updating to the testing packages.

Thanks to all.

I forgot to reply with my results.

When I first tried upgrading all applications to testing as I mentioned before I ran into a problem with one of gnome's applications not compiling and I couldn't solve the problem.

I know the last thing anyone wants to do is reinstall gentoo but that was my last option.

Once I reinstalled I unmasked all applications as mentioned above and then updated my system then installed gnome and everything went through successfully.

I am now running Gentoo with Gnome-2.26.3.

The only problem I have and cant figure out is network-manager wont run.

So I set up my internet manually with wireless-tools and I have to run a script I made everytime I restart to bring up wlan0 and connect to my router.

Not a perfect solution but I'm ok with it.

Congratulations on getting Gnome 2.26.3 working. It was probably unnecessary for you to reinstall the system, but hopefully you learned something from the experience :)

As for NetworkManager, if you disable Gentoo's network device handling and add NetworkManager to the default runlevel, it should "just work". More at the old Gentoo Wiki page.

I only reinstalled because my system was freezing and I thought it was because of a bug but now I realize that when I compile too many packages back to back it overheats my pc and thats why it was freezing. Is that a bug or just a con of compiling from source??

I got Network-Manager working properly with gnome 2.24 butwith 2.26 I have the problem.

I set everything up right as the wiki said but when i rebbot there is no network-manager icon in the panel and when i try to start it from terminal it sais its already running.

Maybe it was because net.eth0 was loading at boot. But what the wiki said to do to stop if from auto starting did not stop it. I found out I have to hotplug it. Maybe I'll try it again with net.eth0 hotpluged. Thanks for pointing that out.

Your PC should never overheat, no matter how hight the workload. Assuming adequate ventilation for your computer case, then probably there is some issue with how your particular's machines BIOS interacts with the operating sytem ACPI management.

What machine do you have? You might want to try Googling for your particular setup and see if others have had issues with Linux ACPI.

As for using NetworkManager with my Intel wireless in my Thinkpad, it was all very straightforward. I just made this line in my /etc/conf.d/rc :

Code:
RC_PLUG_SERVICES="!net.wlan0 !net.eth0"

I then added NetworkManager to the default run level:

Code:
# rc-update add NetworkManager default

and it works after that.

Thanks for the reply.

For the overheating problem I ajusted my fan settings and it seems to of helped a lot although I still think it can overheat. And I have seen a post where someone else had the same problem but no solution was given

Also I tried network manager again, With 2.24 i did the same thing as you said and it worked but it still doesn't work with 2.26 even after adding RC_PLUG_SERVICES="!net.wlan0 !net.eth0" to /etc/conf.d/rc and rc-update add NetworkManager default and rc-update add dbus boot.

I see during boot it sais starting NetworkManager but there is no icon when gnome 2.26 starts up.

Are you using gnome-2.26......If so I cant see why i'm having trouble with it.

no, I'm using GNOME 2.24 -- I always use the stable GNOME so I don't have to deal with these kind of issues :P

Much Thanks

One last reply about my computer overheating.......Turns out my graphics card was the only part overheating.........and my pc was full of dust.......I probrably could of saved it if I used the compressed air thing to clean the dust outa of my pc.

Anyway......i have a new graphics card now and all is working as should.

PS: Don't forget to get all that dust out of your pc.

I have a similar problem (no network at boot), but the cause is totally unrelated (let's just say I'm experimenting). This is the workaround I use, via cron:

Code:
*/1 * * * * if [ `/etc/init.d/net.eth0 status | awk '{ print $3 }'` != "started" ]; then /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start; fi

Basically, what I do is check, every minute, if the network is down. If it is, then start it. On my case I'm away from the computer for days in a row and there's a chance that the network goes away for some reason, so I use this brute force method. I'm sure there's lots of ways to do this in a cleaner way (and I know a few of them), but this works.

I don't think we have the same problem. You said you have no network at boot but I have no Network-Manager icon in my panel.

It is running in the background because when I try to start it from terminal is says is already running. But I can't use it cause it does not show up in my panel.

So I think I just have to wait for Gentoo to update it.

I understand there are consequences for using the masked gnome 2.26 and since this is my only problem, I'm happy.

Thanks for the reply though.

And if anyone else understands my problem and believes they have the solution I will give it a try cause I would rather use Network-Manager instead of manually starting the network every reboot.

Thanks

Network Manager is "divided" in two:

net-misc/networkmanager: it's the Network Manager daemon, responsible for making things work;

gnome-extra/nm-applet: it's the icon that sits on GNOME Panel and allows you to manage Network Manager.

So the problem is that you already have Network Manager running, but nm-applet is not showing up. Do you have nm-applet installed?

Hey sodki

I love you.....don't worry......I just wanna be friends.....lol

All this time the problem was simply that portage did not install nm-applet as a dependency. I just emerged nm-applet and now I'm using Network-Manager for internet.

Thanks a lot man.

*facepalm*

When NetworkManager isn't running the systray icon doesn't show even when nm-applet is running. I did not occur to me to ask whether nm-applet is installed at all!

Lesson learned! :P
